How to Make Mummy Cupcakes

When my mom and I finished making the ghost cupcakes, we still had a bunch of white fondant sitting on our kitchen counter.  We wanted to incorporate it somehow into the next cupcake, but we weren't sure what we wanted to actually make.  Then, I dont remember which one of said it, but one of said, "mummies!" And then the other obviously thought it was a good idea, and here they are: adorable, bandaged, mysterious mummy cupcakes!

Like the ghost cupcakes, these are very simple to make.  What's great about them is that they don't have to be perfect, in the sense that however you drape the fondant"bandages," or strips, is fine!  No one can judge you on how straight or crooked you lay the strips across the tops of the cupcakes, which makes them perfect for those who are just starting to get their feet wet in the baking world.  The mummy cupcakes again require very few ingredients, just a little frosting, some fondant (store-bought is fine, it's what I used!), and some M&M's.  Too simple. Not to mention adorable.

Mummy Cupcakes

Things You'll Need

cupcakes, any flavor
white frosting (can be store-bought)
fondant (can be store-bought)
M&M's (or Skittles, or any round candy of that sort)
rolling pin
pizza cutter or sharp knife
scissors

How to Make Mummy Cupcakes

To start, begin by spreading a very light layer of frosting over the tops of the cupcakes.  You really just want to cover the cupcake in a little bit of frosting so that the fondant will have something to stick to when it is placed on the cupcakes.  If you've decorated cakes before, think of this layer of frosting almost as your crumb coat.

Roll out some fondant on a flat surface with a rolling pin until it is about 1/8" to 1/4" in thickness.  Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut several strips of fondant that are about 1/2" in width, although you can feel free to cut the strips as wide as you want, and even as jagged as you want!  Remember, they don't have to be perfectly even, after all, these cupcakes are supposed to be mummies!  Don't forget to keep your fondant covered with a plastic bag or something to make sure it doesn't dry out when it is not in use.

Once the strips have been cut, begin to lay them out across the top of a cupcake.  Make sure a couple of them overlap with each other, and that a couple aren't going across completely straight.  Try to cover as much of the frosting as possible, but leave a small opening towards the upper side for the "eyes".  Once you are satisfied with the fondant bandages, carefully trim the excess off the cupcake with scissors.  Place two M&M's where you left the small opening to give the mummy eyes, and there you have it, a mummy cupcake!
