Meyer Lemon Poppy Seed Bundt

I'd always been intrigued by Meyer lemons. I'd never actually had the chance of baking with them, let alone buying them until a few weeks ago, mostly because every year I'd completely forget about them until it was too late.  I wouldn't remember that it was Meyer lemon season until the very end of the season, and at that point, I always had to tell myself that next year would be different. Next year I'd try harder.  Next year, I'd actually remember.  It only took about three years of that for "next year" to actually happen.

Meyer lemons are something of a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange. They're rounder and more yellow than typical supermarket lemons, and are less acidic.  They're super juicy and have a thin, wonderfully fragrant skin.  They're really something special, and it's too bad they have such a short growing season!  When I went shopping for winter citrus a few weekends ago (see, when "next year" finally happened, I made sure to really follow through and stock up on all kinds of citrus!), I bought tons of Meyer lemons, without any sort of clue as to what to do with them.  The possibilities were endless but nothing seemed right.  I wanted my first experience with Meyer lemons to result in something truly delectable, and settling on something that was anything less than that was not an option.

Grapefruit and Lime Sorbet

Here's a funny story.  Today did not go according to schedule.  What should have happened today was my dad driving me to an oral surgeon's office.  No, don't worry, it's nothing serious.  I was SUPPOSED to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed today, but due to events out of my control, that didn't happen...although I'm not really complaining.  As someone who has never been through any sort of medical procedure or gone under anesthesia, or even broken a bone, the prospect of this surgery, regardless of how simple and routine it would be, was a bit intimidating.  Fortunately for me, I don't actually feel any of my wisdom teeth yet, so coming down with a light cold last week saved me from having my wisdom teeth removed...at least for now.  I know they're going to have to come out eventually, but for now, I am not going to think about it.  Nope, not going to.

In preparation for my post-wisdom-teeth-extraction, I prepared some yummy, chew-free snacks...mostly Jell-O.  I happen to be a huge fan of Jell-O, so having an assorted variety of flavors available was perfect.  In addition to Jell-O, I also prepared some sorbet.  What could be better than eating sorbet while stuck in bed recovering from surgery?!

Broiled Grapefruit with Brown Sugar and Ginger

I have a short and sweet little post for you today. I am running a bit behind schedule with all my school work, but that's expected, since midterms are coming up next week (ugh).  I just need to find the time to actually do all the reading I need to do, and catch up on the sleep that I totally did NOT get last night (hooray for staying in studio until almost 7 am this morning, and then having a presentation at 9!).  Sigh, but anyway.  Since I am a bit sleep deprived and beginning to realize that I may have been taking my procrastination a bit too far, a short and sweet little post will just have to suffice.  There's nothing wrong with short and sweet and little posts though.  They can be really, really delicious, and sometimes, that's all you need!

Cranberry, Orange, and Pistachio Biscotti

Biscotti make me feel more grown up….the fact that I’m enjoying a cookie that only has dried fruit or nuts and isn't very sweet and has no chocolate chunks or oatmeal or icing seems to be a very grown up thing, and I just don’t know if I’m totally ready for that just yet…I will contemplate this matter as I eat more biscotti.

I made these biscotti with orange zest, dried cranberries, and pistachios, a nut that I did not learn to appreciate until only recently.  Green nuts seemed a little weird, but I loveeee pistachios now.  They’re so good.  This seems like a rather grown up combination of flavors, and the fact that this was the first flavor combination I came up with that I wanted to try (as opposed to a double chocolate chunk biscotti that has been dipped in layer after layer of alternating dark and white chocolate) makes me think that my baking mentality is becoming more mature…am I entering a more grown up world of baking?  I mean, my birthday is coming up VERY soon, but I mean, I don’t really consider myself grown up enough to only make dried-fruit-and-nut cookies…
