Grapefruit and Lime Sorbet

Here's a funny story.  Today did not go according to schedule.  What should have happened today was my dad driving me to an oral surgeon's office.  No, don't worry, it's nothing serious.  I was SUPPOSED to get all four of my wisdom teeth removed today, but due to events out of my control, that didn't happen...although I'm not really complaining.  As someone who has never been through any sort of medical procedure or gone under anesthesia, or even broken a bone, the prospect of this surgery, regardless of how simple and routine it would be, was a bit intimidating.  Fortunately for me, I don't actually feel any of my wisdom teeth yet, so coming down with a light cold last week saved me from having my wisdom teeth removed...at least for now.  I know they're going to have to come out eventually, but for now, I am not going to think about it.  Nope, not going to.

In preparation for my post-wisdom-teeth-extraction, I prepared some yummy, chew-free snacks...mostly Jell-O.  I happen to be a huge fan of Jell-O, so having an assorted variety of flavors available was perfect.  In addition to Jell-O, I also prepared some sorbet.  What could be better than eating sorbet while stuck in bed recovering from surgery?!

I'll tell you.  Eating sorbet and NOT having to worry about dry socket.  That makes the whole sorbet experience so much better.

This grapefruit and lime sorbet couldn't be any simpler to prepare, forrealz.  All it takes is some simple syrup and citrus juice combined in an ice cream maker, and in 20 minutes, you'll have churned up some delicious sorbet.  Grapefruits are in season during the winter months, so you should have no trouble coming across these large citrus fruits.  They have a beautiful pink interior and a nice tart flavor that pairs perfectly with the freshness of lime juice, and when in sorbet form, the flavor combination is just wonderful.  I'm not too crazy about grapefruits on their own, but I loved the way this sorbet turned out.  It was refreshing and delicious, and the hint of lime made me think of the summer days that are to come.

Sorbet was originally going to be my answer to recovering from having my wisdom teeth removed, but now it's just sitting in my freezer, waiting to be properly enjoyed.  I think that when the time comes though, because I know it will, I will be making this sorbet over.  Maybe it'll help to cheer me up!

Grapefruit and Lime Sorbet
recipe from She Wears Many Hats

Ingredients

1 cup sugar
2 cups water
2 teaspoons grapefruit zest
1 teaspoon zest
2 cups grapefruit and lime juice  (I used about 2 grapefruits and 3 limes)

Directions

To begin, combine the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat.  Bring the sugar water to a simmer, and allow it to simmer for a few minutes until all of the sugar has dissolved, and the mixture has thickened slightly.  Remove the syrup from the heat allow it to cool to room temperature.

Once the sugar syrup has cooled completely, combine it with the grapefruit and lime juices and zests, stirring well.  Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker, and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.  Once frozen, transfer the sorbet to a freezer-safe container, and freeze for about three hours, or until ready to serve. Enjoy!
